The Nicoya Peninsula is in the northwest part of Costa Rica. To reach Manzanillo after landing in San Jose, you can rent a car, take a ferry across the Golfo de Nicoya, and then drive to the beach. A short plane ride to Tambor is an alternative to the ferry.
The beach area is roughly a mile long. Each year there's a Sand Castle Festival. In 2005 we came in third!
